In this month we celebrate National Anti-Boredom Month.
It was founded in 1987 by Alan Caruba, a writer and public relations consultant who decided that the world needed a month dedicated to combating boredom because following the 4th of July there’s not much going on, and it’s very hot. And so, it was born, a month dedicated to encouraging us to recognize what makes us bored and find a way to combat it.
But first, let’s recognize that sometimes boredom is a good thing. It gives us a chance to break from routine and relax. Boredom sometimes serves as a source of creativity. Did you know that some of the most famous paintings in the world were created by bored artists?
To quote Esther Kane, “Some of the world’s most famous paintings were created by artists who were bored.
One of the most famous examples is the Mona Lisa. Leonardo da Vinci is said to have been bored while working on the painting, and as a result, he came up with the iconic smile that has made the Mona Lisa one of the most recognizable paintings in the world.
Similarly, Vincent van Gogh is believed to have been bored while painting The Starry Night. The painting is now one of van Gogh’s most famous works, and it’s thanks to his boredom that he was able to come up with such an innovative and timeless piece of art.”
But, getting back to us in the 21st century, we tend to do vacuous things when we are bored – scrolling through our phones mindlessly, turning on the TV and not watching it, opening the refrigerator door, and scanning its contents. But this month is dedicated to learning about our boredom and ways to combat it. Don’t always associate boredom with nothing to do. Boredom can rear its ugly head because we find what we are doing is repetitive, uninteresting, and not challenging.
So, let’s combat boredom with doing something we’ve never done before like:
- Learning A New Skill like (a) studying a foreign language, (b) delving into photography, (c)learning technology, (d) mastering social media
- Doing Something Physical like (a) exercise, (b) sports, (c) decluttering, (d) gardening, (e) walking
- Entertain Yourself like (a) movies and shows, (b) book club, (c) video games, (d) all kinds of parks
Let's join together in taking a break from everyday life and simply enjoy simple things like playing with your dog, going outside, and smelling the flowers. Summer is short let’s combat boredom and love life in July.
