May Is National Recommitment Month
What is a recommitment? According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary commitment is “a promise to do or give something.” The prefix “re” means “again” or “again and again. When used together, recommitment essentially is regularly devoting yourself to a habit, an activity, a cause, a way of life.”
So then, May is the month to look back over our New Year’s Resolutions and examine the goals that are floundering and those that have completely blown in the wind, and recommit our resolution to them. Life gets in the way, we understand. But this is the month that helps us get back on the path toward our chosen target. Do a recommitment with no feelings of self-admonishment because, as one author has said, “Commitment is perfection. Recommitment is human nature.”
Don’t, for one minute, think that you’re the only person in the world who needs a “do-over”. Remember, the month of May is set aside for recommitment for everyone. So, as they say, “pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and hit the restart button.”
Make sure that your goals are within reach. Every time you reach one goal, set a new one. Maintain a positive attitude. Don’t ever let yourself believe that you’ll just give up all over again. Instead, believe in yourself that this you WILL succeed even though there will be bumps and detours in the road.
You’re not perfect. We all have failures on our business spreadsheet. Don’t overlook the opportunity to ask for help when it is needed. There is a NAWBO sister out there who just might have the answer for you.
Celebrate you every time you have a small win. These small successes will encourage you to go on the bigger ones.
If possible, enlist a recommitment partner because it will help to cut off your escape route. Being accountable to someone else serves as a great motivator.
Most of all, be kind to yourself. Remember, success doesn’t come in a day - for anyone!
Here is a list of recommitment ideas to give you a sense of total renewal:
(1) Recommit to your relationships. Pick up the phone and call that woman you met at the NAWBO Spring Rally. You’ve exchanged phone numbers. Now, recommit to calling her.
(2) Recommit to your health. If your business has been stressful, health is the last thing you want to think about. But do it! Start drinking the recommended amount of water each day. Make a small change in your physical activity by increasing your steps by 300 each day. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at how good this small recommitment to health can be.
(3) Recommit to doing good. Volunteer to give some more of your time to NAWBO throughout the rest of the year. Sign up for a committee, make some phone calls, or just drive a friend to a meeting.
(4) Recommit to yourself. Be happy. Do what makes you happy. Take a rest when you need it to recharge. Surround yourself with friends or loved ones. Recommit to doing what makes you fulfilled.
From my recommitment list to yours. Have a happy, productive, and recommitted month of May.
