An Invincible Summer Leader
by: Janet Kendall White, Founder & CEO, Berkshire Group, Inc.
A quote by Albert Camus is one of our favorites here at Berkshire Group, and it reads:
“In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer. And that makes me happy. For it says that no matter how hard the world pushes against me, within me, there’s something stronger – something better, pushing right back.”
With all the negative things happening in the world right now, this can seem like a cold and divisive time. We see negativity and darkness in many areas. But focusing on disunity does not solve any problems. As leaders in our organizations, communities, and families, we have the opportunity to show kindness and understanding to others. We can use our words to call others to positivity. We can use our actions to encourage others to be constructive. Now is the time, more than ever, to lead by example.
During these crazy times, we encourage you to seek the opportunity to spread light. Reach out to loved ones you haven’t connected with in a while and express how much you care about them. Be especially patient with others as you have no idea what they may be struggling with. Donate your resources to a cause in which you believe. Take a few extra minutes to listen to a person with empathy and with the objective to learn, not just to respond.
Remember in doing these things that what may seem like a small gesture to you may have an exponential impact. Take a moment to imagine how you would like others in your organization and your community to act right now. Now go out and be that person.
